What a send-off for Lewiston Fire Chief Roland Dumais. My family just participated in his recent funeral.

The fire department was a huge part of his life, and as Chief George Merrill told me after the services, he was still a part of the firefighters’ “family.”

We were overwhelmed with their support, including honor guards, pallbearers, retired and current chiefs (Auburn and Lewiston), city leaders (including the new mayor) and countless firemen who attended and spoke.

His widow, Mildred, was presented “The Last Call” medal. We came out of the church to find a brand new fire engine, on its maiden voyage, which would lead the procession to the cemetery. When we slowly drove past the Lewiston Fire Department, every truck was in front and the firemen were at attention and saluting. The Sun Journal had that picture on its front page.

On behalf my family, I thank the Sun Journal for the extensive coverage, and all the members of the Lewiston Fire Department who volunteered their time to participate.

I am very proud of my roots in Lewiston, Maine.
