PORTLAND – Barbara L. Scribner, 76, of South Portland, died Wednesday, April 11, at Seaside Nursing Home.

She was born June 27, 1930, in South Portland, a daughter of Walter Gladstone Smith and Fannie Mae (Pearson) Smith, and attended local schools.

On Sept. 10, 1948, she married Philip Audley Scribner Jr., in Portland.

She worked from 1962 to 1997 as the head cashier of Smaha’s Legion Square Market. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. of South Portland, and also a member for over 20 years of the Maine Mariner’s booster club, often having players over for lunch.

She was an avid hockey fan, with her favorite team being the Philadelphia Flyers, as well as an avid knitter and crotcheter who worked all the local craft fairs. She was a wonderful cake decorator, and liked to play bingo, but she got the most enjoyment from spending time with her granddaughter, Shannon, whom she affectionately referred to as her “little pumpkin.”

She is survived by her husband of South Portland; three sons, Clayton H. Scribner, and Joseph S. Scribner and his wife, Catherine, all of South Portland, and Michael Philip Scribner of San Diego, Calif.; three sisters, Eleanor Noyles of Portland, Geraldine Smith of Florida, and Joane Wildes of South Portland; four grandchildren, Manual, Michelle, and Melissa Scribner, all of San Diego, Calif., and Shannon Rose Scribner of South Portland; and three great-grandchildren, all of California.

Besides her parents; she was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Jane Scribner, in 1951; as well as a sister, Catherine Green; and three brothers, Walter, Frank and George.

The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Barbara’s sisters-in-law, Lois Sparks and Joann Sparks, for all the care and support you gave to Barbara, Phil and the family.
