JAY – A Livermore Falls man was listed in good condition Wednesday at a Farmington hospital after he lost control of his car Tuesday night and it collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle on Franklin Road.

Nicholas Berube, 19, was northbound on the road that’s also known as Route 133 and lost control of the 1998 Pontiac Sunfire by the curve near the intersection of Hyde Road, police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

The car skidded out of control, entered the opposite lane and struck a 1997 Ford Taurus driven by David Howes, 43, of Jay, head-on, White said.

Howes attempted to avoid the collision by steering to the right in the break-down lane but was unsuccessful, the chief said.

Both drivers were taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital, White said.

Berube complained of leg injury, he said, and Howes had possible head injuries.

FMH spokeswoman Jill Gray said Howes was treated and released from the hospital and Berube was admitted and remained a patient Wednesday.

Police Cpl. Fournier investigated the accident with assistance from Livermore Falls police officer Ken Bryant. Maine State Police assisted with reconstruction of the accident as well as speed, White said.

“Speed was a factor in regards to the Berube vehicle,” White said, but “alcohol was not a factor.”

Jay firefighters responded to the scene to clean up fluids and provide traffic control.
