PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – New Hampshire’s “sign bandit” has been fined for stealing a roadside sign, but says he will appeal his case to the state Supreme Court.
John Decker of Stratham has been in the news for his one-man campaign to remove roadside signs that he sees as blight.
He was ordered Monday to pay $325 in restitution to the sign owner and hit with a $1,000 fine that was suspended if he stays out of trouble.
Decker says he’ll appeal, arguing it’s legal for a citizen to act if a state doesn’t enforce a law. He also maintains a state Highway Department employee told him he could remove the sign.
