The Sun Journal’s editorial of April 6 about the resort casino in Oxford County is another example of the “haves” oppressing the “have-nots.”

While the “good times roll” in Lewiston-Auburn, it is easy for the hometown newspaper to criticize the country folk from Oxford County who struggle to survive.

While Lewiston-Auburn’s population goes up, Rumford’s is going down.

Why didn’t the article point out that, according to a University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth study, there were 271,000 gambling visits to Connecticut by Mainers last year? That is Maine money going south. That is Maine money that could have stayed here.

In addition, the editorial neglected to state that Oxford County is much more proximate to out-of-state wealth than the limited gambling opportunity in the Bangor area. There is no comparison between the two. They can co-exist.

Why doesn’t the Sun Journal try to help its regional neighbor? Many Web postings that followed the editorial and Portland’s coverage were very much in favor of a casino.

Is the Sun Journal on the same high horse as other moralists who also have forgotten that the tired phrases that oppose gambling no longer apply?

Stop the hypocrisy. State-and church-sponsored gambling already exists in this state in the form of lottery, scratch tickets and bingo.

Come on, Sun Journal. Get on board and give the Rumford area a hand.

Tom Carey, Rumford
