Democrats’ day

AUGUSTA – The Oxford County Democrats and Friends are planning a day at the State House on Thursday, April 26, to observe government in action and visit Democratic incumbents, Sen. Bruce Bryant, Rep. Terry Hayes, Rep. John Patrick, Rep. Larry Sirois and Rep. Tim Carter.

Gov. John E. Baldacci has scheduled a special visit with the group in his office. Field trip organizer Cathy Newell is working with the office of Speaker Glenn Cummings to organize meetings with key legislators and special briefings on issues of interest. House and Senate sessions and committee hearings will round out the day.

Networking session

RUMFORD – A community networking meeting, sponsored by the River Valley Communities Coalition, is scheduled for noon Tuesday, April 17, at the Rumford Public Library downstairs in the community room.

Jane Bubar of Rumford Hospital will speak about the $5.8 million expansion and renovation project.

TU meeting

BETHEL – The Mollyockett Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Gould Academy’s Ordway Hall.

Bill Hanson and Kyle Murphy of FPL will present a PowerPoint presentation summarizing the brook trout, salmon and smallmouth bass work they have done on the Rapid River. They will also discuss the smallmouth bass work they are assisting Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist Dave Boucher with. Boucher will take part in the discussion.

Shelby Rousseau of Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust and the Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsman’s Association will show the “Live the Legend” video. The meeting is open to everyone and there is no charge.

Knowledge series

BETHEL – The Mahoosic Land Trust will offer the fourth and final program of its Local Knowledge Series for the season in Trustees’ Auditorium, McLaughlin Science Center on the Gould Academy campus at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18. Christopher Mattrick will speak on invasive plants.

Class meeting

RUMFORD – The women of Stephens High School class of 1948 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 19, at the River Valley Grill. Call Simonne at 364-3801 if attending.

Grange seed day

RUMFORD – Rumford Grange 115 will hold a Tree Seed Day from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21. For more information, call Vicki at 364-2129.

Relay fundraiser

CANTON – Chinese and silent auctions will be held Saturday, April 21, at the Canton Fire Station. Doors will open at 4 p.m. and the auction will start at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by Canton Cruiser’s Relay for Life Team. For more information, call the Canton Town Office at 597-2920.

Historical society

MEXICO – The Mexico Historical Society will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at the Calvin Lyons meeting room at the Town Hall with a potluck supper.

Poetry night

RUMFORD – A poetry evening featuring guest poets and former educators Ken Nye and Tom Lyford, who will read from their work, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Rumford Public Library. Sponsored by Friends of the Rumford Library, the program and refreshments are free.

Retirees to meet

FRYEBURG – Members and guests of the Oxford County Education Association – Retired will meet at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 20, at the Fryeburg Catholic Church for a business meeting, dinner and a program featuring a local author.

The fundraiser will be a cookie walk. Reservations for the dinner can be made by anyone who has retired from employment by a school district in Oxford County. Call Blanche Sanborn at 935-2473.
