AUGUSTA – The American Cancer Society’s 29th annual Living With Cancer Conference will take place from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at the Augusta Civic Center. The statewide conference will bring together people with cancer, their families, friends and medical professionals.
The conference theme is “Rediscovering the Care in Healthcare.” Keynote speaker Dr. Kenneth Hamilton is a board certified general surgeon, who opened his practice in Norway in 1971.
He became known as a “doctor who listens” and, in 1975, began to study the power of attitudes to change lives and to help his patients face the challenges of serious illness and trauma.
Hamilton will explore ways to restore care to healthcare.
The afternoon general session will feature Dave Winsor, morning DJ on 99.9 the Wolf radio. He was voted Co-Radio Personality of the Year in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Winsor is also a member of the board of directors for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program and is on the radio advisory board for St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis.
Workshop topics will include exercise for cancer patients, recent advances in colon cancer management, the transforming power of art and financial resources for cancer patients. Presenters will include Maine physicians, social workers and other specialists.
Cancer survivors and their family members pay no conference fee, but may order lunch for $10. For other attendees the fee is $30, including lunch. To obtain a brochure or to learn more about the Living With Cancer Conference, call the American Cancer Society at 800-227-2345.
