“Theatre & Inspiration,” a documentary on mime master Tony Montanaro, has earned a 2007Award of Excellence from The Videographer Awards, which recognizes excellence in video production, TV commercials, news and programs, and new media.
The film was developed over two years by Auburn filmmaker and performing artist Leland Faulkner, in partnership with cinematographer Richard Searls of Solon and filmmaker Huey (his full professionl name) of Portland.
“Theatre & Inspiration” was judged to be among the best submitted, and received the highest award given by the judges, who are industry professionals and members of the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, www.amcpros.com.
“It was the rare persona of Tony Montanaro that brought the three of us together. I was Tony’s performing partner for many years. Huey had also taken workshops with Tony. Richard had simply been one of Tony’s fans,” Faulker said.
“We brought our love and respect for Tony to the film, and I think that is one of the things that makes the film what it is, a heartfelt tribute honoring the talent of an amazing artist and teacher,” Faulker said.
Montanaro (1927-2002) was one of the great mime artists of the 20th century who created an impressive legacy and life in Maine. “Theatre & Inspiration” celebrates his life and contributions to the world of theater, as well as the joy he brought to audiences across America and Europe.
In the film, rare archival footage of Montanaro is interwoven with interviews and performances. Featured in these scenes are Montanaro’s wife and performing partner, Karen Montanaro, and legendary mime Marcel Marceau.
In 1956, Montanaro traveled to Paris to study with Marceau and Marceau’s teacher, Etienne Decroux. After performing and teaching around the world, Montanaro journeyed to South Paris, Maine. There, in 1972, Montanaro established the Celebration Barn Theater, a mecca for performers who came from around the world to study with this man who helped redefine mime and theater.
