NEW PORTLAND – Phyllis E. Hewey, 85, of New Portland, died Monday, April 16, at her home.

She was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Temple, a daughter of Carl and Edith (Tyler) Hutchinson.

She graduated from Farmington High School in 1940 and went on to nursing school, graduating in 1944.

She worked as a registered nurse in private duty care, at Franklin Memorial Hospital and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice. In June of 1954, she married Paul Hewey in Kingfield and moved to New Portland.

She was a life member of the Arnold Trail V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, having served as the president and chaplain. She was also an elder of the New Portland Community Church and served on the Session for many years.

She had many hobbies, including gardening, canning and various crafts. She loved a game of cribbage, and each spring and fall looked forward to trips to the Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center to play.

She is survived by her daughter, Melanie Ford of New Portland; a grandson, Tory Ford and his wife, June, of Wilton; a granddaughter, Kim Ford of Turner and her children, Evan and McKella Ford; and stepchildren, Virginia Crump of Florida and Joe Nava of Arkansas.

She was predeceased by her husband, Paul, on March 23, 1993; a sister, Glennis Foss and brothers, Glenwood and Carroll Hutchinson.
