On Monday, March 26 The Lisbon High School drama students presented a play called “The Rules of Comedy.” It was about how to be funny, and they experimented by putting the rules of comedy into Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” It was directed by our very own Ms. Jacqlyn Young, a teacher at Philip W. Sugg Middle School. It was performed at Lisbon Community School. As a reporter for Academic Advocate, several questions about the play were posed to Ms. Young.
Question: “What are some of the major roles?”
Ms. Young: “The two biggest roles are the narrators who introduce the rules of comedy and lead the other actors in putting the rules into “Hamlet.” Prince Hamlet is another big role; he finds out from his father’s ghost that his dad was murdered and he seeks revenge.”
Question: “Who are the narrators?”
Ms. Young: “Sierra Guay and Morgan Hatherley, both sophomores.”
Question: “Summary of the plot?”
Ms. Young: “The two narrators start by talking about different things that are funny and not funny. Next, the other actors come on and present a summary of “Hamlet.” Finally, they act out “Hamlet” again with all sorts of ridiculous changes to make it funny, including cream pies.”
Question: “Are the actors trying to transform Hamlet from being serious to hilarious?”
Ms. Young: “Exactly, it gets a little wild and crazy at the end.”
Question: “How much did it cost to get into the play?”
Ms. Young: “Admission was $1.00 for students and $2.00 for adults.”
Question: “Are you going to do a Middle School drama production, too?”
Ms. Young: “Absolutely, we’ll probably do another Shakespeare spoof, and drama starts in about two weeks.”
“The Rules of Comedy” was without a doubt a hilarious play and fun for the family! Bravo Ms. Young and the Lisbon High School Drama players!
