The course of action for our nation falls into the hands of our representative leaders. But where do these men and women come from, whom we hold accountable?

One, Senator John Nutting, comes from right here at MSAD 52; a graduate of Leavitt Area High School.

Resident of Leeds, Mr. Nutting founded his political career by being a political activist for agricultural rights. He was a simple farmer who became the voice for his fellow farmers.

According to Answers.com, a senate is: “An assembly or a council of citizens having the highest deliberative and legislative functions in a government”. More specifically, a senator writes and votes on bills in the Senate. It is important for a senator to meet with the people of the state to find out what needs improving.

Senator Nutting abides by this definition. “From 1972 to 1986 other farmers would take me to Augusta to lobby on agricultural issues”, says Nutting. From these frequent visits he learned of the legislature process and how easy and vitally important it was for the public to be involved. He was frequently asked to run, and although he was hesitant, they were persistent and he defeated an incumbent. “I learned more in those fourteen years than I ever knew I was learning just by watching.”

By knowing the struggles of the common worker, Senator Nutting has been able to address members of the Senate with the problems that the public faces.

Education is also a subject of great interest for Senator Nutting, as well as the Senate as a whole. It is necessary for senators to weigh the pros and cons of a bill before they vote. One concern of Senator Nutting is how to fund certain programs such as the EPS. “It is a plan that puts millions of school funding money into the wealthiest part of Maine that doesn’t need it,” states Nutting.

Governor Baldacci proposes that we need more property tax relief to help fund education. Nutting disagrees. He poses to have a bill to have this highly debatable issue contain sections that keep funding fair.

It is possible to accomplish goals even if you live in a small town.

Senator Nutting, when asked for his formula for success, states, “It is easier to work hard at a course of study that you love. Work very hard and be realistic in goals.”
