LEWISTON – Carol Gagne, of Bog Road, Monmouth, died Monday, April 16, of complications from pneumonia, with her family by her side at CMMC.
She was born in Winthrop, Nov. 24, 1931, the daughter of Gordon Smith and Annie Chick Smith. She graduated from Monmouth Academy and stayed close to many of her classmates.
She married her first husband, M. Benjamin Ricker Jr., who predeceased her in 1973, and married her second husband, Francis Gagne. He passed away in 1987.
She used her love and skill as a cook, working as a breakfast cook at Happy Jack’s Restaurant, and Kidney Pond Camps at Baxter State Park. A social butterfly and natural flirt, she waitressed at several area restaurants and worked at the parts counter at Portland Clutch.
In 1991, she received a heart transplant, which gave her new freedom to do the things she loved. She enjoyed hunting and fishing with her children and grandchildren. Every family member and friend benefited from her love of quilting. She was known for her delicious yeast rolls, filled cookies and popcorn balls, and peanut brittle at Christmas.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Poland and husband, Dan, of Turner, and Debra Gagnon and husband, Roger, of Auburn; two sisters, Ruth “Bunny” True and husband, George, of Chelsea, and Helen Head of Mystic, Conn.; and two brothers, Chelsea “Chetty” Smith and wife, Jackie, of Fayette, and Earl Smith and wife, Mary, of Winthrop. She had five grandchildren, Amy Poland, Bonnie Addison, Sarah Ricker, Stacey Ricker and Clint Gagnon; and five great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Garrett, Justin, Leah and Benjamin.
She was predeceased by her infant son, Scott Ricker; son, Peter Ricker; sisters, Cora and Lynne; and brothers, Elmore and baby Harry.
Carol’s family wishes to thank her neighbors, Charlotte and Bonnie, Dr. Michael Rifkin and Rodney and the rest of the staff at the Auburn CVS for their kindness and support.
