PORTLAND – Samantha (Hazzard) Capano, 26, passed away Monday, April 16, in Portland.

Born in 1981, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, she was much beloved by her family and her hundreds of friends. She graduated from Gray-New Gloucester High School, attended Elmira College, and the Polarity Realization Institute, and was licensed by the State of Maine as a massage therapist. She owned and operated her own therapeutic massage business in downtown Portland.

“Sam” or “Sammie,” as affectionately called by family and friends, was characterized by her offbeat humor, beautiful smile, razor wit, and a magnetic personality that could captivate a roomful of strangers and friends alike. She had a keen interest in the welfare of people, always putting the needs of others ahead of her own. Ever creative, she loved to draw, sculpt, paint, and play the flute, often marching and playing in the Yarmouth Clam Festival and other holiday parades. She enjoyed great athletic success playing field hockey for the GNG Patriots, was a successful hunter and avid outdoorswoman, and loved to fish and explore the tidal pools of Mosier Island.

Her greatest love was her family and her 4-year-old son, Danny. She was an exceptional mother, and would spend hours and hours with Danny, playing any type of game that would make each other laugh.

She is survived by her son, Daniel Luke Capano; her husband, Matt; her sisters, Holly Hazzard of Boston, and Emma and Sari Hazzard of Freeport; her mother Dian Redway and stepfather, Tad Redway, of Gray; her father, Peter Hazzard and stepmother, Susan Hazzard, of Freeport; and her many grandparents, including Pam and Ron Grant of Topsham, Anne and Bob Hazzard of Brunswick, Daniel Capano Sr. of Naples, Normie and Albert Redway of Woodbury, Conn., and Pat and Bob Owens of Bridgton.
