LEWISTON – Three people were taken to Central Maine Medical Center late Wednesday, after a head-on crash on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge exit ramp in Lewiston.
According to Lewiston police, a four-door white Ford was headed the wrong way up the exit ramp, when it collided with a Toyota Celica attempting to exit from the bridge.
The driver of the Ford, Mark Maxheimer, 37, of 17 Winter St., Auburn, was not wearing a seat belt, struck the windshield. It was not known if the driver, Nicholas Whitmore, 19, 15 Tanglewood Drive, Lewiston, and his passenger in the Toyota were belted. The identity of the passenger was not immediately available. Airbags were deployed in both vehicles.
The cars collided near the top of the ramp, almost onto the bridge.
Police were seeking toxicology tests on both drivers.
The 10:45 p.m. crash forced police to close the off ramp for about an hour while they cleaned up the area and removed the vehicles.
The front ends of both vehicles sustained extensive damage, and both vehicles were believed to be totaled.
