I am an art teacher at Lewiston High School and have been following various stories regarding tax relief and fiscal responsibility with great interest.

Besides assuring the taxpaying citizens of Lewiston that our high school students are truly doing great things and achieving in the area of fine art, I express gratitude for the support of local businesses and individuals. The education of our youth is neither an inexpensive nor frivolous endeavor. When someone makes a donation or lends some form of voluntary support, for no other reason than a belief in our young women and men, I consider it to be a form of civic awareness that is highly commendable.

Last year, the LHS Celebration of the Arts was a tremendous success. The incredible food provided by a Lewiston restaurant made the event even more enjoyable and sent a powerful message to our young artists that their accomplishments matter to the community.

When planning a night out, readers who appreciate such non-compulsory contributions to the schools may want to support those local businesses that support our youth with their generosity.

This year’s second annual LHS Celebration of the Arts is scheduled for May 15, from 5-7 p.m. in the art wing at Lewiston High School.
