FARMINGTON – Claire Porter, an accomplished dancer, choreographer, dance company artistic director, writer and comedian, will be at the University of Maine at Farmington April 26 to 28 for an artist-in-residency program.
Her presentations will include two daytime master classes, an evening public concert and an all-day workshop.
Porter, who teaches dance at New York University and Manhattanville College, has received both National Endowment for the Arts and New Jersey Choreography fellowships. Her work has been produced at Southern Theater in Minneapolis; Duncan Theater in Palm Beach, Fla.; Kitchen Theater in Ithaca, N.Y.; Wooley Mammoth Theater in Washington, D.C.; Off Center Theater in Tampa, Fla.; the American Dance Festival; and the Lucille Ball Festival of Comedy. It has also been presented at the Holland Festival in the Netherlands, Tour of Comedy in Germany and the Korea International Festival in Seoul.
Porter is considered a Laban Movement analyst and has studied at the world-renowned Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies in New York City. She has a master’s degree in dance from Ohio State University, a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Sonoma State University, and has previously taught choreography at Columbia Teacher’s College in New York City.
Porter will teach two master classes from 9:40 to 11:20 a.m. Thursday, April 26, and from 10:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. Friday, April 27, in Dearborn Gymnasium. The classes are free to UMF faculty, staff and students; $5 for the general public. All skill levels will be honored at both classes.
She will give a public concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 27, also at Dearborn Gymnasium. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors/children and free for UMF students with IDs..
Her all-day workshop, “Movement, Writing and Comedy,” is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, April 28, in Nordica Auditorium. The workshop fee, including lunch, is $65 for the general public, $10 for UMF students with IDs. Participants may inquire about a sliding fee scale based upon income.
