I am compelled to suggest a reason for the tragic events of recent years, culminating in the shootings at Virginia Tech. Violent movies, videos games and TV programs, which pass as entertainment, are contributing to this problem. As long as we fail to demand more wholesome, moral entertainment, we will see more and more violent acts committed. We are programming the next generation to glorify violence as an acceptable way of life.

Some well-intentioned people believe the answer is to enact stricter gun laws. However, facts show that nations that adopted that course have seen a rise in violent crime. If gun laws worked, New York City, with its Sullivan Act, would be one of the safest cities in the country. That law makes it very difficult to own or carry firearms, but it is only the law-abiding citizens who comply.

I am reminded of the phrase, “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.”

People need to stand up and say, “Enough is enough!” We need to insist that all facets of the entertainment industry clean up their act. Initially this would result in a decrease in revenue, but one must weigh that loss against safer streets, safer schools and a higher moral and ethical way of life.

The Apostle Paul said it best in his letter to the Galatians, “whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Gal. 6:7)
