AUBURN – There’s $1.2 million in school budget cuts that could be made without slashing sports, closing schools, eliminating teachers and other things that would directly impact students, City Councilor Ray Berube insisted Monday.

Tonight, Berube will present his $1.2 million list of cuts – heavy in administration and non-classroom support personnel – at the Auburn School Department budget public hearing.

Berube will suggest eliminating guidance counselors at the elementary schools, two of four Edward Little assistant principals, the administrative assistant to the assistant superintendent, and a technology administrative assistant.

His grand total for central office administration cuts is $328,046, “and that’s just city hall,” Berube said.

Berube said he’s responding to “scare tactics” from School Committee Chairman David Das, who has said to keep school spending limited at growing no more than 3 percent, $659,000 would have to be cut.

Because there was no place left to cut, that kind of cut would mean “drastic measures,” Das said, such as closing the East Auburn Community School, eliminating sports at the middle school and high school, and reducing three assistant principals administrators at the high school and middle schools.

Some East Auburn Community School parents said they intend to speak out against their school closing at tonight’s hearing. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Auburn City Building.

A few of Berube’s suggested savings include axing numerous positions, including:

Assistant grant writer, $38,192

Office of Learning and Technology co-director, $75,511

Administrative assistant to the assistant superintendent, $31,870

Technology administrative assistant, $28,949

Guidance counselor at Park Avenue Elementary, $33,407

Guidance counselor at East Auburn Community Elementary, $32,656

Guidance counselor at Fairview Elementary, $38,493

Guidance counselor at Sherwood Heights, $49,890

Guidance counselor at Washburn Elementary, $51,186

2 assistant principals at Edward Little: $73,997 and $73,321

1 technology integrator at EL, $35,785

1 guidance counselor, $56,313

1 dean of students at the middle school, $68,298

Other Berube cuts include:

Health insurance benefits in the central office, $66,000

Health savings at the middle school administration, $11,000
