GREENE – A Friendship man suffered cuts, bruises and other injuries Monday after the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a car on Route 202.
Kenneth Barrett, 56, was being treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston following the 4 p.m. wreck near the Lewiston city line. He was listed in stable condition there Monday night, according to a nursing supervisor.
Police said Barrett was pulling onto Route 202 on his Harley-Davidson after helping a friend move his disabled bike, which had broken down moments earlier. He pulled back into the roadway and into the path of an oncoming vehicle driven by Constance Mower, 60, of Greene.
“He got back on his bike and he saw one vehicle pass him,” said Detective Sgt. William Gagne, of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. “He didn’t see the Mower vehicle coming and he pulled out in front of it.”
Mower was not hurt in the crash. Barrett was taken to CMMC after rescue crews from both Lewiston and Greene responded. The report initially indicated the wreck was in Lewiston.
Gagne said Barrett had been driving on Route 202 after leaving Lewiston with a friend on another motorcycle. His friend’s bike broke down and the two men pushed it into the parking lot of a nearby business, Gagne said. It was after pulling his own bike back onto Route 202 that Barrett was struck.
Gagne said Barrett’s injuries were not life-threatening and that he spoke with rescuers at the scene.
It was at least the second motorcycle crash in the region on Monday as more bikers took to the streets during the third day of warm and sunny weather. Another man suffered a broken leg and head injuries in a crash on Paris Hill Road on Monday in Paris.
