AUBURN – Johanna T. De Haan Siemensma, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Sunday, April 22, at the Hospice House in Auburn.
Tjerk, her husband of 62 years, predeceased her April 10, 2006.
She was born Feb. 13, 1917, in Bolsward, Netherlands, the daughter of Andries and Johanna (Gerritsen) Siemensma. She moved to Leeuwarden at the age of 3, and lived in Groningen after her marriage. In 1957, the De Haan family immigrated to the United States and made their home in the Lewiston/Auburn area. Her education in the Netherlands was in teaching clothing design and sewing.
She had worked in tailor shops at several stores in Lewiston. During the summer months she provided sewing classes for teenagers in her home, and continued her teaching in the Adult Education program in Lewiston. As a member of the Embroidery Guild, she had created many cross-stitch and needlepoint projects that reflected her love of Dutch art and are proudly displayed in her family’s home. Music was an intregal part of her life expressed by playing piano and singing in church choirs. She was an active member of St. Phillips church in Auburn, serving as a Eucharistic minister for many years, participating in the annual church fairs, and designing and donating altar linens. Traveling to the Netherlands visiting family and friends created many cherished moments.
She is survived by her brother Dirk Siemensma of Leeuwarden, Netherlands; three sons, Andre and wife, Miriam, of Mandeville, La., Theo of Queensbury, N.Y., and Dirk and his wife, Tina, of Lewiston; two daughters, Maria and her husband, Robert Petrola, of Wakefield, Mass., Ida and her husband, Walter Weissmann, of Bad Windsheim, Germany; daughter-in-law, Lynda of Harpswell; and seven grandchildren, Derek and his wife Stephanie, Johanna, Joshua, Sophie, Kristofer, Heidi and Christian, who endearingly called her “Oma.” Also surviving are many nieces and nephews living in Holland.
She was predeceased by a son, Joseph, who died Dec. 6, 2003; and two sisters, Dini Siemensma and Marie Siemensma.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice Services in Auburn, for the care they gave Johanna during her several visits and the last few days of her long and fulfilling life.
