LEWISTON – Elizabeth Sarah Additon, 58, of North River Road, Auburn, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday at Central Maine Medical Center.
She was born in Portland, a daughter of Walter S. Swiger Jr. and Beulah Daigle Swiger.
She was educated in South Portland schools, graduating in 1966, and attended classes at the University of Southern Maine and Southern Maine Community College.
Betty spent much of her life dedicated to the welfare of others. She worked for Ingraham for 15 years, managing their shelters, and for Regional Transportation in coordinating transportation assistance.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Westbrook.
She enjoyed gardening, crafts, canning, sitting by the lake and spending time with, or talking to, her family and friends.
She was someone who always knew what to do in times of need, offering leadership and guidance to those around her, so it was no surprise that holidays were her favorite time of the year, because she loved giving gifts.
Not that she felt she ever needed a reason, but it gave her an excuse to go overboard. This was especially evident when it came to her grandchildren. They meant the world to her, as anyone who knew her would attest to.
Surviving is her husband of eight years, Robert O. Additon of Auburn; two sons, Brian E. Sturgeon and his wife, Karen, of Portland, and Adam S. Freeman of Auburn; a stepson, Scott Gooding and his wife, Mariya, of Litchfield; two sisters, Cheryl A. Beeman and her husband, Rolla, of South Portland, and Susan R. Swiger of Gorham; her mother-in-law, Lorraine E. Additon of Auburn; three grandchildren, Chandler T. Sturgeon, Callahan M. Sturgeon and Aryn M. Gooding; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Patty Benjamin and Regina Thurber.
She was predeceased by a son, Steven T. Sturgeon.
