DIXFIELD – Local people for the first time will have a chance to hear a presentation on global warming and steps that can be taken to help lessen its impact at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Dirigo High School.

The presentation, by Sara Lovitz, clean energy outreach coordinator for the Natural Resources Council of Maine, will include the impact of global warming on the Maine climate.

Lovitz trained with Al Gore and The Climate Project. The presentation is based on Gore’s Oscar-winning movie, “An Inconvenient Truth.” She has been traveling the state, exposing the public to the facts behind global warming and the steps people can take to reduce its effects.

Bill Hine, a board member with the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition who organized Lovitz’ appearance, said the presentation will be divided into two parts. The first deals with the science behind the global warming theory, then there will be an open discussion on some of the solutions.

“People think it is such a big topic that they can’t do anything about it. But we can lessen our individual carbon footprint,” he said. A carbon footprint is the impact an individual makes with his or her consumption of natural resources, such as fossil fuel, eating food that has to be trucked long distances, and use of electricity, among other things.

Besides being timely, the presentation is part of the coalition’s 10-year anniversary.

The healthy communities coalition grew out of the Northern Oxford County Coalition for Health and Air Quality in 1997.

People interested in attending should contact the RVHCC at 364-7408, or e-mail [email protected] prior to Tuesday’s presentation. A light supper will be served.
