BUCKFIELD – Ten years ago Meghan Andrews-Wright performed in “The Wizard of Oz” at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School. That was her last musical until this weekend when she and her husband Ethan directed and produced “The Little Shop of Horrors.”
The three sold-out performances proved that small schools can produce wonderful entertainment. The audience loved every minute of the fast-paced show, highlighting excellent performances by the students.
Director Ethan Wright said, “This has been the most rewarding experience in my life. I never expected to find this much talent when I came to Buckfield a year and a half ago as music director.”
Twins Hillary Ann and Hannah Elaine Perry, along with Marjorie Swanson, opened the show with their dance routine to the prologue, complete with Bronx accents. Sophomore Brian Doody, freshman Jedidiah Allen and freshman Savannah Wescott kept the flower shop on Skid Row hopping with action. Nick Brann as the voice of the plant Audrey II was a hit with the audience as well.
Comments from the packed house were all positive, such as superlative, excellent performance and great job.
George Reuter, a teacher at the high school, and his wife Melissa said, “It’s great to see all that talent in a small school.”
The Wrights played keyboard and piano in the band combo consisting of two saxophones played by Elizabeth Strout and Maura Broberg, a clarinet, played by Megan Dyke, and percussion, played by Elijah Allen. The combo made a nice balance for the singers, who were all professionally miked.
Meghan, who is music instructor at Hartford Sumner Elementary, said the community had been supportive with contributions in making costumes and props. The set was made by students and teachers.
The production merged the talents of the chorus, drama club and dance club.
