DURHAM – A rented mobile home at 735 Hallowell Road was extensively damaged by a fire of unknown cause Monday night.

Deputy Chief Curtis Dimock said the fire was reported shortly before 7:30 p.m. when the renter returned home to see an attached front porch ablaze. Her name was not available.

A pet cat inside got out safely, the chief said.

About 35 firefighters from Durham, Freeport, Pownal, Lisbon and Lisbon Falls responded, knocking down flames quickly. Additional water was pumped from a dry hydrant at Mill Pond.

An unidentified Durham firefighter suffered from overexertion and was taken to Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick, Dimock said.

The 12- by 70-foot older mobile home on a long dirt driveway was about half a mile from the fire station. It is owned by Roy DeWitt of Durham and is believed to be insured.

Firefighters were still at the scene late Monday night.
