PORTLAND – Paul F. Chantal Jr., 83, of Cape Elizabeth, died Sunday, May 6, at a Portland hospital, after a recent illness.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1923, in New York City, N.Y., a son of Paul F. and Marion L. Gauthier Chantal Sr. He was a graduate of All Harllows High School in New York. He later graduated from the University of Maine at Orono; he earned his master’s degree at Boston College. He also studied briefly at Fordham University.

For a brief time he served with the Marine Corps during World War II. He married the former Rosemary Amatruda on Dec. 26, 1949, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bangor. She predeceased him in 1998.

For more than 33 years, he was a social worker with Cumberland County and the state of Maine. As a young man, he taught school in Stratton.

He was a communicant of St. Bartholomew Church in Cape Elizabeth. He was an active member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus, Cheverus Council No. 2344 and a member of the Fourth Degree of Father Sebastian Rasle Assembly No. 0337. He was a member of the Portland Elks Club. He liked watching spectator sports, enjoyed fishing and camping and loved to travel.

Survivors include a daughter, Joanna M. Chantal of South Portland; a son, Paul F. Chantal III of Cape Elizabeth; a sister, Jo-Anne Chantal Ansbro, and her husband, George, of Bloomfield, Conn.; five nieces and nephews; and a best friend and companion, Gertrude Foley of Portland.
