RUMFORD – The SAD 43 board unanimously voted to allow a Mountain Valley High School senior back to school following a closed session Monday.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin said the board, with all members present except Chairwoman Linda Westleigh, met in closed session with high school Principal Matt Gilbert, Assistant Principal Chris Decker, the 18-year-old boy and his parents.

After 30 minutes of a hearing and deliberations, the board took action. The young man returned to classes on Tuesday.

Hodgkin declined to provide the nature of the infraction that led to his expulsion three months ago; however, Logan D. White, 18, of Rumford, was charged with aggravated marijuana trafficking and furnishing drug paraphernalia in February at the school following his arrest by Rumford police. He was subsequently expelled.

The student readmitted Tuesday is expected to graduate with his class next month. During his expulsion, Hodgkin said he kept up with his class work through home-schooling.

As part of the criteria required for readmittance, the student underwent a risk assessment conducted by a counselor from outside the district.

Hodgkin said expulsions have been few this year. A middle school student was expelled last year but moved from the district. Another middle school student was expelled in February for assaulting a staff member at the school.
