This is in response to the April 28 editorial, “Council should speak for silenced Auburn taxpayers.”
I appreciate the role of the Sun Journal in presenting issues on many subjects, with challenges and solutions for the community at large. I didn’t have that feeling from the opinion published regarding the school budget.
Referencing the school comittee’s actions with accusative phrases such as “stifled the concerns of many residents,” “predicting doomsday situations,” and “conjure new reasons” seemed tacky.
The editorial board might have had more than “a sneaking suspicion” if the newspaper had pressed school administrators and committee members on the budget points the editorial, in hindsight, sharply criticized.
I attended the jam packed hearing at City Hall and heard both sides express opinions. I’m sure the committee did not turn a deaf ear to critics. The editorial implied arrogant disregard.
I don’t agree.
I have great respect for both school committee and City Council members. I believe they have citizens’ interest at heart. I believe taxpaying citizens deserve accountability, whether it is our educational system or other city departments which from time to time come under fire.
I look to the Sun Journal to keep me informed with future issues in a timely fashion.
Please get there before, not after.
Bob Gardner, Auburn
