LEWISTON – Frank A. Campbell, 84, died peacefully Saturday, May 5, at Montello Manor.
He was a resident of Canton since his birth on Jan 6, 1923, until he moved to a lovely apartment at Montello Heights, Lewiston in February 2006.
The son of Ralph Errol Campbell and Maude Cummings Campbell, he graduated from Canton High School in 1941. He joined the U.S. Army to serve his country during World War II. Before shipping overseas he married Gwendolyn Cox on July 11, 1943. He served in North Africa, the invasion of Anzio Beachhead, in France and in Germany, earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He continued friendships with two Army buddies, hearing from both of them in the past month.
After the war he joined his brother, Ralph, in operating the Campbell Brothers Garage for several years. He then joined the U.S. Post Office as the rural letter carrier for Canton and Hartford, a job he loved and did for 34 years. During that time he and Gwen were very active in the Maine Rural Letter Carrier Association, with Frank serving as the state secretary. They attended many national rural letter carrier events with their close friends, Helen and Richard Adams.
This sparked their love of travel, with special trips including two trips to Hawaii, one to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. After reading a Sun Journal Sun Spot, he reconnected with his military regiment, the 157th Infantry of the 45th Division. Annual reunions throughout the country led to more travel, with the highlight being a “Reunion Tour of the 157th Returns to Europe” through France and Germany in 1989. Their trip to Alaska with the Adams in 1998 (a lifelong dream,) was Gwen’s last, as she passed away in July 1999. His last trip was when he joined the Rumford VA group to attend the dedication of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. in May 2004.
He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as post commander, the Legion, Canton Historical Society and Small Woodlot Owners of Maine. He served as a selectman of Canton and was very active in local affairs. He attended the Canton Baptist Church.
Known as “POP” or “BAMP” to many, he is survived by daughter, Priscilla Campbell-Wyman, and husband, Dr. Ross Wyman, of Kennebunkport and their children, Jane Wyman, Rhys Wyman and Henry LeClair; granddaughter, Leanne Langlois, and her husband, David, of Turner; grandson, Brian Campbell of Canton; great-grandson, Barry Brian Campbell; great-granddaughter, Ally Jo Langlois; “adopted son,” Gary Dougherty of Nashua, N.H.; brothers, Ralph, Neil and Sheldon, and his wife, Norma, all of Canton; sister, Annie Chamberlain, and her husband, Lucien, of Worcester, Mass.; and many cherished nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws and friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gwen; son, Barry; great-grandson, Colby Langlois; parents; sisters, Eleanor Campbell, Pauline Jasper and Marguerite Packard; and brother, Carleton.
The family sends its sincerest appreciation to the staffs of Russell Medical Center, Montello Heights and the staff of Montello Manor, especially the north wing caregivers.
