AUBURN – Linwood C. Clements, 91, of 44 Woodlawn Ave., died Friday, April 27, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born in Lewiston on Nov. 25, 1915, a son of the late Charles H. and Blanche L. Brown Clements.
He was educated in Lewiston schools and graduated from Lewiston High School in the Class of 1933.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, 103rd Infantry, 43rd Infantry Division and was also a member of the Merrill’s Marauders Association.
He received the Bronze Star for bringing a soldier from his platoon, who was severely wounded by a Japanese mortar shell. Disregarding his personal safety, he left cover and went to his comrade’s aid. Under terrific enemy fire he picked up the wounded man and carried him to safety.
On June 29, 1944, he married the former Isabel M. DiMauro. She died April 15, 2006.
He worked as canteen officer at the Togus Veterans Hospital, retiring after 25 years of service. In 1959, he received the Award of Merit given to the Veterans’ Canteen Service at Togus for being the outstanding canteen in the area, which includes all of New England, New York and Puerto Rico. This was the third time in five years that Togus had won this award.
He was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph’s Parish and most recently a member of the Auburn Catholic Community at St. Philip’s Parish.
He was a member of the Sons of Italy, United Commercial Travelers Club, YMCA, where he and his wife enjoyed tours with the group. He was also a member of the Square Dancing Club and Summit Spring Golf Course and enjoyed bowling.
He loved spending time with his family and friends and will be remembered for his humility, his warm sense of humor and kindness to his family.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gerald C. (Jerry) and Polly Clements of Auburn; four grandchildren, Kurtis Clements and his wife, Ann, Stephen Clements and his wife, Terri, Maria Clements and her husband, Richard Gill, and Matthew Clements and his wife Elizabeth; seven great-grandchildren, Haley, Nathanial, Grady, Nicholas, Marshall, Lydia and Grace; his brothers-in-law and spouses, Frank and Philomena Chiaravelotti of Lewiston, Anthony and Mary Chiaravelotti of Newton, Mass., and Mario and Barbara Chiaravelotti of North Conway, N.H.
He was predeceased by his wife, Isabel; two sisters, Gladys Laboissiere and Phyllis Walton; two brothers, Raymond and Clifford Clements; and his brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Jennie Bennett.
