RUMFORD – A 38-year-old man was arrested after allegedly breaking into the home of his estranged girlfriend and trying to slit the throat of her sleeping male companion Sunday night, police said.
Dwight Knox of Franklin Street was charged with elevated aggravated assault, burglary, violation of a protection order and violation of a condition for release order, which also involved a protection from abuse order.
After the attack it is believed Knox fled that home and was later arrested at his home.
“Knox refused to leave the residence and subsequently officers were required to enter the residence, which had two adult males, a pit bull and Knox’s child,” according to a release issued by acting police Chief Mark Cayer. “Both males, Knox and Genie Provencher, were subsequently arrested. The pit bull had to be sprayed with a chemical agent and the child was turned over to its mother, who was also the protected person in the abuse order.”
Provencher was arrested and charged with hindering apprehension and/or prosecution.
Both Knox and Provencher were transported to Oxford County Jail. The male victim of the attack was not charged with any crime.
“It was a tense few hours until Knox was secured, once officers learned of his whereabouts and that Knox had fled to his residence and had custody of a child,” Cayer said.
Knox and Provencher remained in jail Monday afternoon. No bail had been set for Knox. Provencher was being held on $500 cash bail.
