TOPSHAM – Mary D. Arnold, 88, of Brunswick, died Friday, May 11, at Amenity Manor.
She was born Jan. 28, 1919, in Portland, a daughter of Ephram J. and Johanna Crystal Audette. She was a graduate of South Portland High School 1936. She married James H. Goan Sr. in Portland, 1941. He died in 1965. She later married Donald Arnold in Portland, 1967. He died in 1997.
She was a member of the Third Order of the Lay Carmelites of both Winchendon, Mass., and South Portland, the Holy Cross Sodality, South Portland and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Brunswick. While living in Massachusetts, she had volunteered as a home visitor for Catholic Charities USA, and was an active member at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Winchendon.
She was interested in gardening and music. She was especially gifted in every form of knitting, crewel, braiding rugs and quilting. Her family and friends will fondly remember her weakness for chocolate, ice cream and donuts. Earlier in her life she had enjoyed traveling and visiting historical landmarks along the East Coast. Above all, she loved her family.
She is survived by two sons, Lawrence Goan, and his wife, Patricia, of York and John Goan, and his wife, Gaynor, of Winchendon, Mass.; five daughters, Joanne Thibeau, and her husband, Michael, of Eliot, Nancy Gaudet, and her husband, Keith, of Westbrook, Helen Prescott, and her husband, Robert, of Topsham, Maryann Puemape of San Diego, Calif. and Theresa Glass, and her husband, Eric, of Brunswick; two sisters-in-law, Mary Audette of Naples, Fla. and Virginia Baldwin of Jaffrey, N.H.; more than 40 grandchildren; more than 30 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, James H. Goan Jr.; two brothers, Warren T. Audette and Charles Audette; and two sisters, Helen Laweryson and Alice Williams.
