BUCKFIELD – Selectmen approved the 2007-2008 town meeting warrant Tuesday night, which includes an article authorizing selectmen to deed two pieces of wetland to a conservation trust.
The properties are on Bear Pond Road on the Turner town line.
Holmes suggested the land be signed over to a trust to protect and maintain the wetland.
Selectmen voted to put a 1.3 acre piece up for bid. Holmes said he would do so immediately.
Though the budget is down $30,000 from last year, the amount to be raised by taxes will be $152,753 more than last year because there is no more money in the fund balance to use to offset taxes as in the past.
Seth Carey of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises presented information on a proposed gaming facility in Oxford County.
He showed an artist’s sketch of the proposed resort. The board had several questions for Carey.
Selectman Skip Stanley asked what was the driving force to choose a location.
Carey said the proximity to transportation was a big factor.
Holmes asked who makes the location decision.
Carey said it’s a board of directors.
Holmes asked who made up the board and Carey replied it was mostly his family and friends.
Holmes asked, “This will not be run by a Las Vegas company?”
Carey said they will have to hire a management company, but did not clarify further.
He said it would be Maine- owned and operated. He said the focus is to get it on the 2008 ballot.
He was not looking for confirmation from selectmen, and they said they would need more information before deciding to back the casino or not.
Carey said Rumford selectmen supported it 3-2. His purpose, he said, is to present information on the proposed facility to the towns in Oxford County.
