Poets to meet
BREWER – The Maine Poets Society will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Muddy Rudder, 5 South Main St. There is a registration fee for attendance, which includes a continental breakfast. Guests are welcome.
The results of two contests, open to members only, will be announced. The morning contest, a poem on the subject of schools, any form, with a 26-line limit, will be judged by a member of the society, Cynthia Brackett-Vincent. The afternoon contest, a sonnet, either Shakespearean or Italian, will be judged by Kathleen Sullivan.
The morning session will include a business meeting and the afternoon session will include a “reading in the round,” where all those attending are invited to share a poem.

Walk for autism
PORTLAND – The Bridges Foundation, a nonprofit, charitable organization based in Maine, is putting together a walk in order to raise funds to open a store and workshop space, which will support employment opportunities for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities.
The walk will take place on Sunday May 20, at Back Cove (Baxter Boulevard). Registration will begin at 1 p.m. and the walk will start at 1:30. Snacks and drinks will be provided. For more information, call Stephanie at 657-5585 or visit www.thebridgesfoundation.org.
Horse show
SKOWHEGAN – The Maine Horse Association will hold its annual three-day show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 15, 16 and 17. The show offers a vast variety of breeds and has more than 100 classes, $4,500 prize money, vendors, music, refreshments and and an auction.
There will be activities for the kids and door prizes. The special attraction will be a mini-horse racing demonstration. Start time is 1 p.m. Friday, June 15. For the first time, several fees have been eliminated to allow more horse exhibitors the opportunity to show and compete. Spectators are welcome.
The show draws exhibitors from the southern end of the state through the Bangor region.
Writing contest
BANGOR – Maine Mental Health Connections, a consumer directed mental health agency, announced that it is accepting entries for its third annual creative writing contest, with cash prizes of up to $50 for the first-, second- and third-place winners.
Eligible entries must be essays or works of fiction under 2,000 words or poetry under 100 lines.
They must be original, unpublished works submitted in English; no more than five entries a person.
There is no prescribed theme, no entry fee and no purchase required to enter.
An anthology of outstanding entries will be published and distributed free to all those whose entries are selected. The copyright of each entry will otherwise remain the property of the author.
Entrants desiring their names not to be used in this publication should so indicate on each submission.
Entries and contact information should be submitted to Creative Writing Contest, Maine Mental Health Connections, 150 Union St., Bangor, ME 04401. Deadline for submission is Sept. 1. Winners will be notified by Oct. 31.
