While hundreds gathered to pay their respects to a fallen officer in Franconia, N.H., on Wednesday, the family of the man who shot the officer were mourning, as well.

“I just wanted the people to know that we’re mourning, and it seems like something’s not right,” said David Kenney, the father of Liko Kenney, who shot Cpl. Bruce McKay four times, then ran over him with his car on Friday.

Liko Kenney then was shot to death by a passer-by, with McKay’s own gun.

The family is planning a memorial service for Liko Kenney at the family-run Tamarack Tennis Camp on Sunday at noon, at the camp’s soccer field.

The service is open to the public, David Kenney said.

“It’s really a big loss and we have a lot of community support and I think … there’s going to be a change coming out from all of this,” Kenney told The Associated Press in a phone interview Wednesday night. “I’m a little bit concerned about the guy who shot Liko being out and about with a gun and a police scanner, for the safety of others. But I probably shouldn’t get too involved right now.”

David Kenney was referring to Gregory Floyd, the passing motorist and ex-Marine who witnessed McKay’s shooting. Floyd, who was in a pickup with his son, grabbed McKay’s gun and shot Liko Kenney to death when he refused to put his gun down. Authorities quickly ruled the killing was justified.

Liko Kenney, 24, a cousin of champion skier Bode Miller, had been convicted of assaulting McKay in 2003 when the policeman arrested him. Kenney claimed McKay assaulted him and broke his jaw, but authorities said McKay only defended himself and Kenney’s jaw was not broken.

Some family members said Kenney carried a gun afterward because he feared McKay.

David and Michele Kenney were out of town, working on a family coffee plantation in Hawaii when the shootings happened Friday. Liko Kenney was born in Easton, but spent much of his early years in Hawaii.

“It’s a hard week, it’s going to be a hard week,” David Kenney said. “There’s a lot of community support. That’s helping a lot. And I think Liko was a beautiful child and I’m going to miss him a lot. He had a lot to offer.”
