FARMINGTON – Roderick-Crosby Post 28 American Legion on Tuesday honored Charles Bennett as its legionnaire of the year.
Bennett was given a plaque to recognize the many hours he gives to legion work, he said Wednesday. He is a past commander of Post 28, now district commander, which covers seven posts in Franklin County.
The honor was also bestowed, he said, for his work on the new memorial at Meetinghouse Park. The memorial, dedicated in November on Veterans’ Day, was installed in honor of veterans who served in the Korean War through now. Bennett organized the eight-month project, which included raising $11,000.
Bennett will complete the work installing two benches that will flank the walkway to the memorial in Meetinghouse Park this week in time for the Memorial Day parade and services. The benches were donated by Coles Land Transportation Museum of Bangor.
Post 28 also worked on plans for the Memorial Day service and parade. Future commander John Gee of Chesterville has asked U.S. Sen. Susan Collins to be the guest speaker during the 9 a.m. service on May 28 at the post. The parade will follow the service and Collins will take part as parade marshal.
