CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A convicted murderer is back behind bars after disappearing a week ago.

The Corrections Department says Francis Gay surrendered to a deputy U.S. marshal in Concord early Wednesday and was returned to the state prison. Gay, of Middleboro, Mass., is being held in the maximum security unit.

Gay was tracked to the Boston area, where officials worked with Gay’s family to convince him to surrender, Corrections Department spokesman Jeff Lyons said. A family member drove Gay to a prearranged location in Concord where he turned himself in without incident, he said.

Gay disappeared last week after leaving the North End Halfway House in Concord for an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

Gay was serving 18 years to life for homicide and was expected to be released on parole in July. The Parole Board will hold a hearing on whether to rescind parole.

He is charged with escape, which could add up to seven years to his sentence.
