LEWISTON – Police on Wednesday rescheduled the dedication of Railroad Park as a memorial to officers killed in the line of duty to this afternoon because of rain and wind.

The park will be renamed Simard/Payne Memorial Park in honor of Officers Paul J. Simard and David R. Payne. Simard was shot and killed on July 7, 1958. Payne was shot and killed on July 23, 1988.

The dedication will be held at 5 p.m. at the park on Oxford Street. The officers’ family members are expected to attend, as are city officials, police officers and members of the department’s Honor Guard.

The park connects to Auburn’s Bonney Park via a walking bridge.

Bonney Park was named in honor of Auburn police Officer Rodney “Rocky” Bonney, who was also killed in the line of duty.

The Lewiston City Council agreed to change the name of Railroad Park to Simard/Payne Memorial Park in March.
