RUMFORD – The dedication of the memorial to honor the 37 Oxford County servicemen who died during the Vietnam War has been postponed until Memorial Day.
Len Greaney, one of the organizers of the event that had been scheduled to take place on Saturday, said Wednesday morning that several factors resulted in the cancellation of the May 19 date.
He said several of the dignitaries, including Gov. John Baldacci and Gen. William Libby, along with several others, and the cancellation of the F-16 flyover, led to the decision to postpone.
Also, he said, the weather may not be conducive to the nearly day-long affair.
Another canceled event that led to the decision was the motorcycle roar-in at which several hundred motorcyclists were expected to ride through Mexico and Rumford prior to the dedication at Veterans Memorial Park.
Greaney said he is working with Bob Richardson, commander of the Rumford American Legion Post, to set up the dedication for Memorial Day on May 28.
He said he has been talking with the families of the deceased servicemen, and will announce a new time and event agenda later in the week.
Greaney, and leader of the Oxford County Chapter of the United Bikers of Maine, Scott May, who is a Vietnam veteran, have been working for several months on the dedication. They have raised the $11,500 needed for the black granite memorial, which is covered with a blue tarp at Veterans Memorial Park.
