E. Hamilton Brooks of Salem, N.H., who lived in Auburn for 12 years, has written a book about the many who volunteered in the Spanish-American War throughout New England and the nation as needed after the sinking of the USS Maine.

Titled “Patriotic Sacrifices of Valor Remembered: How America Became a World Power,” the book contains factual information and documents passed down by families of war verterans and 48 photos. It also has a true adventure story of Capt. Lincoln H. Barney, a VFW member who lived in Freeport for 50 years and foster grandfather of Shirley V. Brooks, wife of the author.

Brooks spent more than a decade doing research for the book. Some of the historical places in Maine mentioned in “Patriotic Sacrifices of Valor Remembered” are the Lewiston-Auburn area, Camp Powers (now known as Camp Keyes in Augusta), Bangor’s Park, and the Rockland area.

Before graduating in 1955 from Freeport High School, Brooks joined the U.S. Navy Reserves. He served on destroyers out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the Cold War period. He attended the University of Maine and graduated from Purdue University of Insurance Management.

The book may be purchased at bookstores; online at amazon.com, walmart.com, Google.com, and barnesandnoble.com; or e-mail [email protected].
