Lewiston Reps. Margaret Craven and Walcott have recently written eloquent pieces in the Sun Journal about the value of the MaineCare insurance program. Unfortunately, the people who look to the community mental health system for services reimbursed by this critical insurance program will soon begin to experience a system being torn apart by the removal of up to $100 million of state and federal funds over the next two years.
The Maine Legislature is considering budget proposals which, if passed in their current form, will clearly have a devastating impact on the community mental health system in Western Maine.
The Maine mental health system is highly rated by national organizations for very good reason. It ranks favorably in terms of cost, quality and access. The agencies working in our communities work collaboratively in a number of areas. All staff work honorably in very difficult situations, and are effective stewards of public resources.
We are the people who respond 24 hours a day to crisis and to tragedy, as well as to individuals who are reuniting with families, returning to work, overcoming substance abuse and living healthy lives while coping with mental illness.
I would encourage state legialators to please, before the final vote is cast, look into the faces and hear the incredible stories of triumph of our family, neighbors and friends who are consumers of mental health services.
