AUBURN – A group of four people escaped serious harm Sunday afternoon when their boat capsized on Lake Auburn.
According to police Lt. Tim Cougle, the 15-foot boat began taking in water shortly after boat owner and operator Ken St. Peter shoved off from the Lake Auburn boat launch near Route 4.
Before pushing off from the shoreline, the boaters forgot to plug the drain on the floor of the boat, Cougle said. It began taking on water quickly, according to Cougle.
“The boat sank and all four occupants were plunged into the lake,” he said.
When officers arrived at the scene shortly after 2 p.m., the four boaters had been safely pulled from the water. They were all evaluated and treated at the scene by Auburn fire and rescue personnel, Cougle said.
No one was seriously injured.
Cougle was not sure who, if anyone, helped the boaters to shore.
The boat was pulled from Lake Auburn by the Auburn Fire Department.
