WATERFORD – A Waterford woman was seriously injured Sunday afternoon after the vehicle she was driving smashed head-on into a tree.

Michelle Moran, 39, was initially listed in critical condition at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, but was upgraded to stable condition Sunday night.

The accident occurred at 3:55 p.m. on Route 37 near the intersection with Passaconway Road, according to Maine State Police Trooper Adam Fillebrown.

Police are still investigating what caused Moran to strike the tree but say that “speed is definitely a factor.”

“The impact snapped the tree and left it spread across the roadway,” Fillebrown said.

Witnesses who called in the crash to 911 said that Moran was in and out of consciousness immediately after the collision, according to Fillebrown.

The 2001 Subaru Legacy that Moran was driving was declared a total loss.
