FARMINGTON – Melanie T. Coombs of Farmington will become the new library director at Farmington Public Library as of July 1.

Coombs will take the position held since 1987 by Jean Oplinger. Oplinger will retire to pursue work as an indexer.

Coombs, who will become the seventh director of the library since its founding in 1891, has most recently been director of Bailey Public Library in Winthrop. She holds a master’s degree in library and information sciences from the University of Rhode Island.

The library’s Board of Trustees invited the public to a retirement tea for Oplinger from 3 to 5 p.m. June 13 at the library.
