AUBURN – They still had a third of their season remaining going into this week, but the Edward Little Red Eddies know that, for all intents and purposes, the playoffs are already underway.

EL, ranked 15th in the latest Eastern Class A Heals, picked up some much-needed points last night with an 11-5 win over rival Lewiston at Auburn Suburban Little League’s Austin Field.

The Eddies improved to 5-8 while avenging a 7-6 loss to the Blue Devils earlier in the season. The Devils, ranked fifth in the latest Heals, dropped to 8-5.

Adam Redmun stroked a pair of home runs and knocked in three to lead EL’s 13-hit onslaught. Adam Lutz had a pair of hits and drove in two runs. Matt Meserve, Cody Goddard and Alex Janelle also collected two hits apiece.

It was a big night for Redmun, the senior first baseman who tore the ACL in his left knee during football season and has been having difficulty getting comfortable at the plate all season long.

“It’s wicked special,” Redmun said. “If we’d lost tonight, then the playoffs are probably out of the question.”

Redmun clubbed a 2-0 pitch to right for a solo homer that gave EL a 2-0 lead in the second. An inning later, he pounced on a 3-2 fastball and belted it over the fence in center to make in 7-1.

“He’s been working his butt off all year long,” EL coach Scott Annear said. “I think he needed that confidence (from the first home run). He’s the kind of kid that really feeds off that confidence well.”

The early cushion was a big help to sophomore starter Goddard, who went the distance for the Eddies while yielding two earned runs on just three hits. He fanned six, walked six and hit two batters.

“I felt like once we got through the first and second inning, he could really settle down,” Annear said.

Jon Paradis got Lewiston within shouting distance with a two-run double in the fifth, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. But Edward Little responded with two in the bottom of the frame and two more in the sixth to pull away.
