OXFORD – A horse show and auction scheduled to take place on Memorial Day at the Oxford County Fairgrounds has been canceled.

Gordon Curtis, president of the Farmers Draft Horse, Mule, and Pony Club, said the decision was made after officials at the fairgrounds said horse owners would need to have proof of insurance, rabies shots, rhino shots, and a Coggins test to enter the grounds.

Curtis said the club learned of the requirements in a meeting with officials on Thursday. The two-day event, which was to include horse demonstrations and an auction, would have taken place Saturday and Sunday.

In a letter drafted by Curtis to be sent to club members, he said rhino shots are a new requirement for the event. He said that while most teamsters attending the event would have the required proofs, others might not be able to get the shot and required documentation in the week between the notification and the event.

“We certainly do not want anyone turned away at the gate, for any reason,” Curtis said in the letter.

The club’s board of directors voted to cancel the event on Saturday.

Curtis said the club hopes to come up with an event in the near future, but nothing has been set thus far.
