WILTON – Although a Massachusetts developer has submitted an application for a site-plan review for a new Comfort Inn on Route 2, the final location of the facility has not been determined.

LaFrance Hospitality Co. of Westport, Mass., has been working with Wilton, and submitted an application to the Planning Board for a 90-room Comfort Inn. But the final decision about whether it will be located in Farmington or Wilton won’t be made for a couple of weeks, Alison Hagerstrom, executive director of the Greater Franklin Development Corp., confirmed Tuesday.

The developer still has a couple of people to meet with and wants more information, she said, before he makes a final decision, said Hagerstrom, who has been working with the developer.

There is an application for a three-story Comfort Inn to be built on Route 2 this side of the Farmington line that will come before the planning board on June 7, said Code Enforcement Officer Paul Montague.

The inn, which would tentatively be located on the site of the the former home of Robert Bowering, which was taken down last fall, appears to be a wood-frame building with clapboard or siding and a pitched roof, Montague said. The motel proposal includes a pool and meeting room with a small breakfast area on about 20 percent of the 6.5 acre lot, he said.

LaFrance owns several motel/inns in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, according to its Web site. Attempts to reach Richard LaFrance Tuesday were unsuccessful.

“This will provide an important new facility for the town,” said Town Manager Peter Nielsen Tuesday, if Wilton is chosen for the motel. “Good things bring more good things. It’s being built for people coming to the area and that’s the biggest benefit,” he said.

Events in the Farmington/Wilton area are getting so large, the need for additional lodging is becoming more pressing, said Lorna Nichols, executive director for the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.

“I receive many, many calls for lodging, but there aren’t enough places to put everyone. From that perspective, I think it’s very positive news,” Nichols said. “For a hotel chain to come to this area means they have done their research, see the need and feel it would economically be good for their business. This speaks volumes for Franklin County,” she said.
