Opponents of the war in Iraq will march through the center of Lewiston-Auburn Monday to mark Memorial Day.

Organizer Jon Svitavsky called the event a patriotic rally to support the troops by getting them out of Iraq.

“We’re going to rally on behalf of the troops and just let our voices be heard,” Svitavsky said. “There’s a consensus of many, many people who are very frustrated with what’s happening with the Iraq war and they are very enthusiastic to try and do something about it.”

Svitavsky is coordinator of the L-A for Edwards campaign.

The rally begins at 1 p.m. on Court Street in front of Auburn Hall. Marchers will walk across the Longley Memorial Bridge and up Main Street to Lisbon Street. It ends with speeches by Svitavsky and Maine veterans in front of Sen. Susan Collins’ Lisbon Street office.

“We’re going have some people speak, especially veterans,” he said.

“What I hear more and more every day is how disgusted people are with the war and how terribly it’s decimating the military.”
