LEWISTON – The George Armstrong Custer Post 7, Grand Army of the Republic Association, will conduct Civil War ceremonies at noon Wednesday, May 30, at the Riverside Cemetery.
The ceremony will be held in the section of the cemetery where 14 Civil War veterans are buried, with special emphasis at the grave of Stephen L.T. Marriner, who was a prisoner of war in a Confederate prison – Salisbury Prison in South Carolina at the age of 20.
The program will begin with the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” and Pledge of Allegiance by the assembly. Douglas Taylor will give the invocation followed by singing of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” by the assembly.
The Gen. John A. Logan’s Order 1, setting aside May 30, 1868, as “Decoration Day,” will be read as will President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
Larry Mayes will give an address on the Battle at Gettysburg, July 1863, and Jerry DerBoghosian will provide the history of Custer Post 7.
