OQUOSSOC – Summer time is fast approaching and the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association will offer its Junior Guides Program. The 11th season will begin on July 9 for youngsters ages 9 to 12. It is an opportunity to have fun while learning about outdoor activities and the traditions of the Rangeley area.

The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on six consecutive Mondays at the clubhouse on Old Skiway Road. It will include basic canoe skills, hiking, camp cooking, archery demonstrations and woods safety.

“Hooked on Fishing” activities will give youngsters hands-on instruction in insect identification, fly-tying and fly and spin casting at the clubhouse pond. Youngsters will have the opportunity to catch some of the newly stocked brook trout. Animal identification and habitat will be introduced using the safari kit, with molds for making animal tracks.

The advanced group youngsters will learn about camping with map and compass work, an overnight campout, first aid and a mentored day of fishing.

The association offers the program free to the participants as a way of sharing the love and respect of the outdoors.

Preregistration is required and space is limited. Contact Stephanie Palmer, program director, at 864-5647.
