LIVERMORE – Locks are being changed and deadbolts added to secure the Brettuns Community Building after the heat was cranked up, windows opened and damage done to an insulation compartment.

A member of a quilting club that uses the building reported the situation to town officials, who then notified police and selectpersons, Administrative Assistant Kurt Schaub said.

There was no forced entry to the building, Schaub said, and it is believed that someone got a key, made a copy and used it to enter the building.

It was unknown when the intrusion occurred, he said.

The top of the windows were opened and the thermostat was put on 80, he said. Someone cut into the foam insulation compartment around the water station, which feeds the community building, library and the town’s highway garage, he said.

The thermostat is kept low at the community building during winter months to keep the pipes from freezing.

People sign up to use the building for a weekend, and a key is given out to that person and then returned to the town office, Schaub said.

The new locks will have keys that are difficult to duplicate and a deadbolt will be installed that will only be unlocked by a town representative when an event is going on, he said.

In other matters, selectpersons agreed Monday to put an article on the Thursday, June 14, town meeting warrant to ask voters if they want to have the treasurer’s position appointed by selectpersons rather than elected.

Schaub has served as the treasurer for five years, and he has no problem with the position being appointed, he said.

The role of a treasurer is to report to the Board of Selectpersons on town finances, he said.

To him, Schaub said, it’s a very logical thing to do since selectpersons are responsible for town finances, and they should hire the person who will supply that information to them.

Schaub said Town Clerk Renda Libby would rather see the position stay elected.

The board also voted to hire Randy Tirrell of Livermore to fill a 24-hour-a-week position as landfill attendant. The position was vacated last week after the board fired an employee for violating the personnel policy and taking some of the town’s junk steel.
